SHASTEENS IN HENRY &
D
EFIANCE COUNTIES, OHIO

Much of this information is courtesy of the fine folks at the Henry County Ohio Genealogical Society www.henrycountyohiogenealogy.org They have some excellent database information readily available on the web and are easily at this point the best county site I have encountered! Also contributing sources were the Defiance Public Library.

This section covers the two brothers Edward and William who moved on to the Henry & Defiance (& Williams) Counties area circa 1825-1830.

Key Shasteen Locations in NW Ohio

HENRY COUNTY was formed April 1, 1820, from old Indian territory and named from Patrick Henry
WILLIAMS COUNTY
was formed from old Indian Territory, April 1, 1820, and organized in April, 1824.
It was much reduced in 1845 by the formation of Defiance, to which the townships of Defiance,
Delaware, Farmer, Hicksville, Milford, Tiffin and Washington were given
DEFIANCE COUNTY was formed March 4, 1845 from Williams, Henry and Paulding, and named from Fort Defiance.

Edmund & William Shasteen Initial land purchases in NW Ohio

Note that Edmund is in Henry Co. and William is in Williams Co. which is northwest of Defiance Co. A key point is the deeds were dated 1835 under the authority of  an Act of Congress of April 24, 1820 which is not the date of payment.
I have requested chain of title information from a very nice lady at the Defiance County Courthouse (May 2008) and expect to have sufficient information to clarify lineage of Edmund and William.

Edmund Shasteen Land 1 Edmund Shasteen of Henry County Ohio purchase of 40 acres dated 7 Oct 1835 "the south east quarter of the north east quarter of section twenty one in township five north of range five east in the district of lands subject to sale at Wapaukonetta Ohion containing forty acres."  [This is Adams Twp, NE corner of county, directly west of Napoleon Twp]
Edmund Shasteen Land 2 Edmund Shasteen of Henry County Ohio purchase of 40 acres dated 7 Oct 1835 "the south west quarter of the north west quarter of section twenty two in township five north of range five east in the district of lands subject to sale at Wapaukonetta Ohio containing 40 acres." [This is Adams Twp, NE corner of county]

William ShaNteen Land  - Williams Shanteen of Williams County [Note that part of Defiance Co came from Williams Co. Feb 1826- Mar 1845] purchase of 40 acres dated 8 Oct 1835, "the south east quarter of the north east quarter of section eight in Township four north of range five east in the district of land subject to sale at Piqua Ohio containing forty acres." [This is Richland Twp, East border Central township of county, southwest from Napoleon Twp.]

Shasteen, James The "unplaced"

Per his obituary he was born 2 Mar 1815 in Rockbridge Co., VA and died 29 Dec 1887 in Napoleon, Defiance Co., OH and was buried in U.B. (probably United Brethren) Gilson cemetery
.

County history states "James Shasteen - son of James and Frances Shasteen, was born in Virginia in 1815" however, Frances has yet to be found.  Per his obit "...came to Richland township, now in Defiance county, and settled near the hamlet of Independence in the year 1826”. Per info from the Defiance County Genealogical Society "James Shasteen settled in Pleasant Township between 1837 and 1844. He was the first Justice of the Peace in that township."

Perhaps he is the son of:

William Shasteen and his unknown wife who came to Defiance County with Edmund?

He had no younger males listed in census records with his family.

Edmund Shasteen and his wife Susana Whitten?

Not likely, as he already has a son James Madison Shasteen.

More likely, it is one of the following.

James Shasteen and posited wife Martha from Ross County?

There is already a James in that household. Could Martha not be the wife of James?

John Shasteen and Hannah Whitten (m1 1815) or (probable m2 1821) Susan Campbell from Ross County?

There were two potential males in that household in the appropriate age group.

Will Papers Page 1  - Application for Letters of Administration - Lists children as James A Shasteen, Mary A. Stout, H [Harvey]. A. Shasteen son, Phebe Minsel, Frank C A Shasteen. Bond by Mary A. Shasteen [wife] and Henry Snyder signed by Frank Shasteen [Note a Henry Snider was living in 1850 household] Probate papers Page 2 Gives death as 29 Dec 1887 - Will dated 6 Jan 1887 - Page 3 - Page 4 - Page 5 - Page 6 - Page 7

Obituary dated Jan 2 1888 - Additional information: Settled near the hamlet of Independence in the year 1826 (and assumably moved to Pleasant 1837-1844). Purchased from the State the east half of the south-east quarter of section 10, Napoleon township, upon which he settled...lying immediately adjoining the corporation of Napoleon.

Not sure of the connection yet. Don't know who the owners were of Shasteen and Son, Merchants. Have not yet found anything for them in Ottawa County or Circleville. But another indication of a connection!
Nothing in the 1875 Atlas of Ross County, nor the 1871 Atlas of Pickaway County, nor the 1900 Atlas of Ottawa County.
